A Bit About Them
Turtle Shire is a grassroots rehabilitation effort founded in 2019 and run by a single rehabilitator and her apprentice; together they have made a measurable difference for turtles and terrapins across the Fayetteville area, rescuing, and releasing countless animals back into the wild. Their care expenses range from X-rays and medication to feeding tubes, inventive surgical techniques, as well as providing safe housing for recovery. Sometimes taking calls around the clock—sometimes responding to as many as five calls in a single day—and while their dedication is unwavering, their small team does not currently have the capacity to support volunteers. Through these hands-on efforts, Turtle Shire not only restores individual animals but advances our collective native wildlife and expands practical medical knowledge; supporting this initiative help keep compassionate, expert care available for the animals that share our landscape.

Dr. Strobes at Crossover Veterinary Clinic has been a steadfast advocate for our shelled patients, tackling the unique challenges of taking X-rays of box turtles—meticulous positioning, tiny anatomy, and the need to minimize stress and radiation exposure all make each image a careful, time-consuming effort. The cost of proper diagnostic care for these small reptiles can be higher than owners expect, reflecting specialized equipment, slower handling, and the expertise required to interpret subtle findings, but Dr. Strobes consistently balances compassion with clear explanations so the turtles receive the critical care they need. We’re deeply grateful for his skill, patience, and tireless commitment to the health of box turtles and every creature he treats.
